Old Perithia Corfu

Old Perithia in Corfu

Old Perithia is Corfu’s oldest village located on the north-east part of the island beneath Mount Pantokrator. This village was originally formed as a hideaway from pirates and that is why the spot was strategically selected so that the residents could see the sea but could not be seen. The village is an example of Venetian architecture even though it is not that close to Corfu Town. For many years it was the centre of the municipality of Kassiopi and it was full of life. Later, during the 20th century, the inhabitants started moving closer to the coast as tourism offered more career possibilities especially to the young people. Gradually, almost everybody left and the village was abandoned. Nowadays, many people are returning and the village is coming back to life. Many houses are restored and there are restaurants that serve local, traditional food. One of them is Taverna “The Old Perithia” which is the oldest in the village and still run by the same family. Also, there are the bee hives owned by Vasilis Siriotis where you can go see the bees and buy local honey and other handmade organic products made with beeswax and honey. This village is perfect for a day out and definitely a place worth visiting. It is a ten-minute drive from the villa or an hour’s hike.
